Artist Statement

My work is inspired by my childhood, memories compel me to image making. This is magical process, one I share with Louise Bourgeouis:

“my childhood has never lost it’s magic

it has never lost its mystery

it has never lost its drama”

These memories were hidden from me in my adult life as a busy practitioner. As I entered the MFA program at Maine Media College memories surfaced and as I explored my past I began creating images. I used self-portraiture the inhospitable forests of winter, sometimes using nudity, to express the loneliness, vulnerability and sadness of my childhood. Often in this trauma I escaped into an imaginary world to cope. Alcoholism and violence destroyed many in my family of origin. I mourn this loss. I moved on to create a secure world for myself and my daughter.

I graduated with my MFA in May of 2019.
